PRO2FAKER — PROFiling FAKE news spreadeRs

A CDTI-backed project to build a tool that automatically tackles the problem of identifying fake news and helps pinpoint and map the communities of users who spread it.

The tool focuses on monitoring social media and the internet to detect disinformation early, trace its propagation routes and profile its main spreaders.

Key features

  • News aggregation together with supporting evidence
  • Identification of trusted communities and users for sharing information
  • Assessment of credibility levels
  • Countermeasures against social media manipulation

Events such as Brexit, the US elections, the Catalan referendum and the Qatar dispute are examples of mass disinformation that justify the need for tools like PRO2FAKER. One notorious case: a fake tweet about Barack Obama in 2013 wiped $130 billion off the stock market.

INNPACTO — ECOPORTUNITY Project

Together with the University of Valencia, we carried out the ECOPORTUNITY project under the INNPACTO subprogram, part of Spain's 2008-2011 National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation.

The project's aim is to build a platform (a software tool) that analyzes the economic and social environment through multiple information sources — including the internet and social media — to detect opportunities that let governments and other economic agents create favorable conditions for exploiting them.

Tool objectives

  • Anticipation and identification of economic opportunities
  • Decision-making support based on competitive perspectives
  • Generation of alternative forecasting scenarios
  • Development of competitiveness improvement strategies for public and private agents

Project partners

  • University of Valencia — Experts in economics and economic-cycle forecasting
  • Autoritas Consulting — New social communication techniques, analysts and software developers

HCE-COD — Clinical Record Coding

A scientific research and technological innovation project: development of an intelligent automated process for coding clinical records.

The HCE-COD project gives hospital medical-documentation teams an automatic clinical-record coding tool with a control panel for supervision and re-learning from manual corrections, connected to the hospital's health information system.

Automatic clinical record coding relies on a linguistic decomposition of the terminology and syntax physicians use in the patient diagnosis process.

HCE-COD solves this by building a mathematical representation model, with machine learning of the association between that representation model and the official coding used, plus prediction of new codes from text input. In short: coding new diagnoses and procedures written in natural language.

Project contributions

  • A strategic consulting and change-management model
  • An automatic coding and supervised re-learning product
  • Training on the tool and its feedback loop
  • Ongoing maintenance to improve coding quality

AL4TOUR — Active Listening for Tourism

Part of Plan Avanza, an initiative to boost R&D&I in the Information Society, driven by Spain's Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade.

The AL4Tour (Active Listening for Tourism) project researches technology tools for managing information generated on the internet, through two case studies focused on the tourism sector. The goal is to go a step beyond the tools already available online and deliver genuine active listening.

Active listening means being able to react appropriately and proactively to the inputs received, enabling organizations or destinations to enter the conversation.

Case studies

Case 1 — Tourism destinations (DMOs)

Uses web data mining and text mining to extract online opinions about tourism destinations, applying web crawling, wrapping, text classification and computational linguistics.

Case 2 — Hotel properties

Development of a web scraping system to track each hotel's online reputation (score) on every portal and store it in a centralized system.
